The M21 & M22 is a four speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The M21 & M22 is a Muncie engineering design, this transmission is aluminum case, extension housing and side cover. The side cover has seven bolts and two shift cams. The synchro rings have 35 teeth and the unit has a 4 step cluster gear.

This lower angle of the teeth imparts greater strength to the gears, but it also increases the noise caused by the meshing of the gears. Discussion Starter · #1 · Jan 24, 2014. I found a pretty good deal on a used Muncie M22 and was hoping for some help in identifying whether the internal gearing is indeed for the M22. I've been told that sometimes people switch them out and pass it off as the M22. The markings on the casing are definitely from the M22.

Muncie was looking for a way to reduce the thrust load caused by the high gear helix angle on the standard gears, around 43 degrees. The M22 with it's 20 something degree angle on the gears reduces thrust loads on the main shaft.
